Terrace farming
What is it?
Terrace farming is similar to contour farming with both strategies integrating knowledge about the property's contour and topography into planting and farming strategies. However, contour farming does not change the contour or gradient of the land while terrace farming creates level embankments at different elevations along the contours of the property.
Conservation Benefits
- Reduces the amount of soil erosion from the land into streams
- Reduces the amount of chemical and nutrient runoff into streams
What does it include?
Terrace farming creates level embankments at different elevations along the contours of the property to minimize soil erosion and chemical runoff. The different terrace levels can also promote more efficient infiltration of irrigation water and rain water into the soil.
