Protecting Material Stockpiles
What is it?
Construction sites will often need to create large storage piles of soil or other material during construction. If these materials are protected correctly, they can be moved off of the site into adjacent riparian and stream habitats by water or wind erosion. Soil or other erodible materials should be located aways from drainage areas, covered, or contained in temporary perimeters.
Conservation Benefits
- Prevents loss of soil from construction sites and limits soil entering riparian and stream habitats
What does it include?
Proper location : stockpiles should be located away from drainage areas. This will decrease the likelihood that water runoff will intercept the pile and subsequently carry soil away from the construction site.
Cover: covering stockpiles with tarps (or other material) or temporary sheltered structures can be effective for erosion from storm events.
Temporary perimeters: can be an effective method to contain sediment in stockpile areas. Perimeters can include sandbags and sediment barriers .
