Soil Aeration
What is it?
Soils become compacted on construction sites from the use of heavy equipment and temporary road construction. Once construction has been completed, soils intended for vegetated areas should be aerated to promote vegetation regrowth.
Conservation Benefits
- Increases soil infiltration and reduces runoff and erosion
- Promotes regrowth of vegetation by improving infiltration, oxygen accessability, and root penetration.
What does it include?
Soils are typically aerated using mechanical methods and equipment. Spike aeration is a common mechanical method and involves using a roller with spikes (length depends on soil type) that penetrates the ground forming pockets of air and breaking up the soil.
