Floating Log Cover

What is it?

Floating log cover involves placing logs (or fallen trees) into the stream to provide cover for fish and aquatic organisms. This technique should only be used in streams where there is little overhanging riparian vegetation.

Conservation Benefits

  • Provides instream habitat thermal refuges for fish and other aquatic organisms

What does it include?

Logs or fallen trees are secured in the channel or to streambanks to maintain position in the stream. Size of the logs will vary depending on habitat needs and intended placement location in the stream. Logs or trees with intact branches are preferred. Floating log structures are typically used in low flow velocity areas like pools or slow runs.
